Board Approves New Commercial/Non-Residential Vacant Properties Ordinance

7/24/2026

On Tuesday, July 21st, the Board of Commissioners voted to approve a new ordinance that is designed to improve our vacant commercial and non-residential properties around town.  Vacant building property owners will be required to register with the town if their building will be vacant more than 90 days.  The purpose of the registration is to identify and document the location of vacant structures to monitor blight, prevent the abandonment and deterioration of structures leading to unsafe conditions, to improve the quality of life for residents, and to promote the economic vitality of the Town.  Registered properties will be required to pay fees as long as the property remains vacant as well as maintaing liability insurance coverage of at least $250,000 for each vacant property with proof of insurance required.  Notice will be sent to all property owners of commercial and non-residential properties.  We feel this is an important step to revitalize our downtown and surrounding business district.
